Dear Roger Could you help settle an argument? My friend and I are both self employed. We’ve had a bit of friendly banter over what can be claimed as legitimate expenses for the tax return. He says that if you work away then you’re allowed to claim at least 2 alcoholic drinks a night. I’ve said that this can’t be true as the Tax man wouldn’t fund a ‘night out’! Can you help? Thanks Arguing pair. Dear Arguing Pair Good news for you as you've won the argument or the friendly banter! You cannot claim any alcohol as the tax man will not fund this. The only legitimate claimable expenses when working away is accommodation and meals with no alcohol, but do not think that first class hotels and top class restaurants are included in this. The tax man will probably disallow a portion of that type of claim as excessive Hope this settles the matter between you and your friend. Thanks Roger
