Democracy Watch with Jacqui Thompson

jacqui thompsonHi, I'm Jacqui Thompson living up in the north east of our county, near Llanwrda.

For the past three years or so I've been writing a blog. I cast a critical eye over Carmarthenshire County Council and try and look underneath the tight fitting lid of our local government.

As is the nature of a blog, the opinions expressed are my own and I am not affiliated to any political group or party, but I hope I've raised a bit of interest in the goings on at County Hall where decisions are made which affect every aspect of your daily life, and encouraged a few more to take to their keyboards.

As reported, two plain clothes officers from Gloucestershire Police observed the meeting from the public gallery and as has been mentioned elsewhere, two boxes of papers were removed from County Hall by the police on Friday. Only two boxes I hear you ask.

Carmarthenshire Council seems to have got itself into a bit of a lather over a 38 Degree petition to 'Save Carmarthenshire's Disabled Children's Respite Services' . The petition, which raised over 1000 signatures in twenty four hours urges the council not reduce respite care centres for children with profound needs.

Since the end of September, the decision by the appointed auditor, Anthony Barrett, that two payments appearing in Carmarthenshire Council's accounts were 'unlawful' has been simmering along and seems unlikely to go away.

Following the recent council budget 'Seminar' held at Y Ffwrnes (by invitation only...bloggers' invites seem to have got lost in the post**), details are beginning to emerge of some the fifty two areas of council services facing potential cuts, as The list is not exhaustive but gives a rough idea where the cuts are heading, and where they're not heading for that matter.
