Guardians Of The Galaxy has been out for a while now, but here is a film review by Josh Thomas of Your Llanelli News / The Geek Show!
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been doing well for itself in the past couple of years. Especially this year with releases like Captain America 2, X-Men Days of Future Past, SpiderMan 2 and of course, The Guardians of The Galaxy. And the latter is what I'm going to be talking about today.
Not many people had previously heard of these Guardians, so the success of the movie has been one that is quite surprising when you look at it from a certain perspective. But what is it about Peter Quill and his band of misfits that gripped movie goers across the world? We're going to find out as I review Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy.
As a HUGE comic book fan, I usually get a little bit skeptical when it comes to movie versions. For example, The XMen comics are my favourites, but the movies are at the point where they're using Wolverine as their money making venture and leaving out most of the amazing characters which usually take up the pages of the comic book. I was afraid this would happen with The Guardians.
The concept is pretty much the same in both comic and movie. A band of heroes from all corners of the galaxy coming together to beat the bad guys and have a ton of fun doing it. And this is why audiences everywhere loved it. There was something magical about seeing these different (hilariously written) characters come together with a rare dynamic to fight for the same cause.
We are introduced to Peter Quill (Star Lord), a human who was taken from Earth as a young boy after visiting his dying mother. From there we catch up with him years later where he's roaming through the galaxy and we then meet his soontobe allies Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax. When they come together to break out of the Kyln, an intergalactic prison where they attempt to protect an orb before Gamora's father uses it to destroy the Galaxy.
It's then the story really takes shape and without spoiling it too much for you, we get to see the dynamic between the characters, their backgrounds, their personalities and how they come together as a group. Like everyone else, my favourite characters had to be Groot and Rocket. If you'd have told me that I'd have an emotional connection to a Raccoon and a Tree, I would have laughed in your face. But this film gave me exactly that.
In the comic books, their friendship is something I loved reading, and thankfully they made that a part of the film and it seems I wasn't the only one who was taken by it. People have fallen so in love with Groot that Marvel have given him his own line of exclusive merchandise and comic sales for the series have soared. But they're not the only characters in the movie that made an impact.
Ronan the Accuser and his right hand woman Nebula (played by Doctor Who's Karen Gillan) also made the action in this film epic. Going against the guardians, the fight sequences left you on the edge of your seat throughout, right down to the final battle. We also get to see Thanos, someone who has gone up against nearly every single character in the Marvel Universe. The Infinity Gauntlet is also a part of the movie which will make comic readers a little bit more excited.
With a sequel already announced, it's no secret that this movie has blown up worldwide. It's simply fantastic. Even the soundtrack (which is one of the best soundtracks to any film EVER) has made it on to number on on various charts! If you haven't seen this film then you're missing out. Whether you're a superhero fan or not, leaving the cinema will make you want to turn around and go and see it for a second time.
I definitely give this film a solid 9/10!
