Classic Doom Review

You may know First Person Shooters like Call of Duty, Counter-Strike and Halo.

But I will be talking about the game that started it all, Doom!

It was first released in 1993 in Shareware form and you get fight and kill enemies like Zombies, Imps, Demons and Lost Souls. Its great fun, while its not the first Game of its kind, its one of the most successful games to date.

The gameplay itself is quite simple, you need to run to get across a gap (No Jumping). You start the level off with a Pistol (with 50 Bullets) and a Fist, then you can get other weapons such as Chainsaws, Shotguns, Chainguns, Rocket Launchers, Plasma Guns and BFG (Big Freakin' Gun).

In the Original Version of Doom, there are 3 Episodes, "Knee Deep in the Dead", "The Shores of Hell" and "Inferno", there is also a fourth Episode in The Ultimate Doom known as "Thy Flesh Consumed", You only get "Knee Deep in the Dead" in the Shareware version.

The story takes place in the Near-Future on a Space Station in Mars known as UAC (United Aerospace Corporation), but is invaded by the demons from Hell, you play as a Space Marine and you must escape from the invaded space station and kill all the demons and zombies.

The bosses you fight with are The Barons of Hell, the Cyberdemon and the Spider Mastermind, and enemies you get attacked by are Zombies (with Pistols), Sergeants (With Shotguns), Imps (with Fireballs and claws), Demons (with Teeth), Cacodemons (with fireballs) and Lost Souls (with force). You must kill them all before they kill you.

This game is great fun and can be from easy to mega-hard to beat. there are 5 Difficulty levels to choose from, "I'm too Young to Die" which is easy, "Hey, not Too Rough" which is a bit tougher, "Hurt Me Plenty" which is Medium, "Ultra-Violence" which is Harder, but if thats too easy or you, try "NIGHTMARE!", it is a Hard as you can get, No cheats, Fast Monsters and they respawn after being killed (Lost Souls don't however).

This game can be bought from Steam for £5.99, you can also buy Doom II and Final Doom from this Service also costing £5.99 each, if you don't want to buy the game or want to try it, you can always download the Shareware version free of charge.

Type in Doom Shareware in your favourite search engine, unless your downloading Doom95, you will need a program called DOSBox to install and run the game.

If you have a slower computer or don't like using DOSBox or Doom95, you can use a Source port, I would recommend Chocolate Doom as it comes very close to the Original DOS Version.
