The Waat4 Challenge has now run for the past 4 years and this year has surpassed all expectations with £31,000.00 raised for charity in one single event.
The endurance event which requires teams to navigate their way over the Brecon Beacons is organised by a small team of Dyfed Powys Police officers and staff from the Brecon area.
This year saw 70 teams taking part from various areas of Wales and the UK with a choice of two routes for teams to choose from - a hard 40km and an easier going 30km route. Both of them included a climb to the top of Pen y Fan. Teams are required to pass through a number of checkpoints staffed by volunteers with the highest checkpoint on top of Pen y Fan staffed by members of the Gurkha Company based Brecon.
“This was an outstanding amount of money to raise and it was well over our target for the year,” said Gary Philpott, who helped organise the event. “We then top off the day with a hog roast meal and prize giving where the first teams home from both routes receive trophies. All competitors received a medal and a T shirt as a memento and the team with the most money raised were also presented with a trophy.”
This year, Wales Air Ambulance received £10,000 and Brecon Mountain Rescue was also presented with £10,000 and £5,000 going to our guest Charity Teenage Cancer Trust. The Waat4 challenge also helps Communities and will present some more cheques in the coming months.
“I think the whole organising committee is really proud at what this event has managed to achieve since it started in 2009. I would pay tribute to the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Wales Air Ambulance staff who are present during the event and play a key role in delivering a safe,” said Chief Superintendent Steve Hughson. “To date the Waat 4 Challenge has raised £95,000 for well-deserving charities here in Wales.
“We are aiming to achieve even greater things next year, when we hope to attract 100 teams to take part in our 5th Anniversary event.”
If you would like to take part in the WAAT4 Challenge on 22nd June 2013, entry will open on the 1st December 2012 where there is a discount to enter for the 1st three months.
