Better flood protection for people in Pwll

Environment Agency Wales will start work next week on a new flood defence scheme to provide better protection for people living in Pwll, Llanelli.

A number of properties in the area have flooded in the past from the River Dulais, most recently in July 2009.  An investigation by Environment Agency Wales found that 158 properties at Stepney Road , Bassett Terrace and Sandy Road, in Pwll, were at a significant risk of flooding from the River Dulais.

A new scheme will provide better protection to people in these properties, and will include:

  • a 90 metre-long flood wall and 50 metre-long earth embankment

  • a flood overflow channel to carry floodwater to the SandyWaterParkLake

  • a new foot bridge over the flood overflow channel to connect Beach Road and the Millennium CoastalPark

  • improved habitat for migratory fish and eels

The new overflow channel will also help the local environment by improving habitats for wildlife.

Phil Pickersgill, from Environment Agency Wales said:

"This is an important development for Pwll, and we hope it will reassure local people who live with the threat of flooding in the area.

"One in six properties in Wales is at risk from flooding, and while we can't always prevent flooding from happening, we can reduce the chances of it happening in the future."

The Agency is also doing its best to cause as little disruption as possible while work is taking place. Materials will be brought in early in the morning to avoid rush hour traffic and temporary traffic lights will only be used when necessary.

The scheme, funded by the Welsh Government, will cost £1.4million and is due to be finished in the autumn.
