Burry Port RNLI Charity Golf Competition 2012

by Hugh Owen

A successful competition was held at the Ashburnham Golf Club on Friday 14 September 2012.

On a blustery Friday 25 teams of four competed in a golf competition to raise funds for the RNLI’s station at Burry Port. This was a true test of golf as the players had to play into a strong north westerly wind which was of no help on any of the 18 holes on this links course.

At the presentation Mr Trevor Griffiths, station chairman, thanked the 100 players who had taken part in the day’s event.

Thanks were extended to the directors of Ashburnham Golf Club for allowing the station to host the event at the links course. Special thanks were extended to companies that had sponsored individual holes and to our two main sponsors Jason Rees Building Services Limited and Andrew Scott Limited Construction and Engineering based in Port Talbot.

Mr Roger Bowen, Lifeboat Operations Manager, who organized the day than thanked all the helpers who had made the day possible. Roger then went on to announce the winners of the various competitions held during the day.

Mr Huw Dixon and Mr Tony Washer, past captains of Ashburnham Golf Club presented prizes for the longest drive by a junior which was won by Ben Sheppard, longest drive by a female won by Cath Jenkins and longest drive by a male won by Club Professional Martin Stimson.

There were prizes for the first eight teams and these were presented by Mr Jason Rees and Mr Mark Bowen, MD, of Andrew Scott. The winners were the Burry Port RNLI team consisting of Roger Bowen, Lifeboat Operations Manager, Neil Roberts, crew, Ian Phillips, shore, and guest Nigel Powell.

This was a very successful day which raised £2000 for the charity, it is hoped that next year’s event will be even more successful as in 2013 the Burry Port station will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary.
