This is one that just surfaced on Facebook. It originated in an email from 1998 but like many other hoaxes has made the transition to Facebook.

We won't show the whole text as it is rather long, but the main gist of it is that:

"Warns that the artificial sweetener aspartame (a.k.a. "NutraSweet" and "Equal") is toxic to humans in a hundred different ways. It even coins a brand-new medical term for these effects: "aspartame disease." Source Urban Legends About

Could be titled Killer in your fridge or Health information on ASPARTAME. the opening lines are different but the all tend to mention a 'World Environmental Conference.'

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick she just knew she was dying.

She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.

She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19, I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her an article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but, she sure felt a lot better.

She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.

Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind. In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda.. and literally dying a slow and miserable death

When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete recovery. And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article saved her life.

If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as'Nutra Sweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant. I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

Google Diet Soda hoax and many pages are shown which mention the hoax. The all say that there's no evidence to suggest that Aspartame can cause any illnesses.

Snopes.com have more on the subject and have rebuttal from a David G. Hattan of the US Food and Drug Administration in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. From initial web searches, Dr Hattan does exist.

A hoax? I suggest all of you read up on aspartame. How many times was aspartame rejected from the FDA? Searles aspartame safety testing was proved fraudulent and under investigation until David Hatten replaced the lead investigators. Then it just took a few of the corrupt individuals who had prior ties to the very company who produced aspartame or saw the monetary potential to get into the FDA board and let it pass through. Now I have agreed with most of what I've seen on snopes.com and although I do agree that aspartame likely has nothing to do with MS it has a monstrous amount of ill effects on the human body and their one individual source was non other than David Hatten.

Actually, recent research suggests a tenuous link between the use of artificial sweeteners (type not specified) and bladder cancer. Unproven, but hypothesised.

"This stuff is a chemical and so poisons your body don't use it"

Good luck with your non-chemical diet. I suppose you'll die of thirst before you die of starvation. That is if you don't suffocate yourself first, in an attempt to avoid breathing in all those chemicals that make up 100% of air.

By first hand I know how bad this stuff is.

I Was on warfarin anti coagulant, they could not get my levels to stay steady.

I read about the dangers of warfarin so stopped my I.n.r went through the roof it jumped from 2.6 up to 8.5.

It took weeks of monitoring to get it down,.

My levels stayed steady for the 12 week intervals all I had done was so dining diet sofa with aspartame in it.

This stuff is a chemical and so poisons your body don't use it

I'm told that artificial sweetener was a product of the cold war, originally designed as a nerve agent and made to taste sweet so that the enemy would scoff on it! Can anyone confirm this?

I have RLS, and I was drinking diet pop
for the last 4 years. After I read the article above in early April of this year(2013), I quit the diet pop cold turkey.
Since then, my RLS has reduced extremely.
The episodes are not any where as bad, or
lasting as long. I have not changed any-
thing else. I have told my doctor about
it, and his reaction was, "I'm glad to
hear about the change. I have read a study that mentions other problems"
