Llanelli to get Hollywood Glamour?
A touch of Hollywood could be coming Llanelli’s way if a local entrepreneur has his way. Harry Webb, owner of Ynfytyn’s Gallery in Pontyates has set his sights on recreating Hollywood’s most iconic symbol above Llanelli.
“I want to put Llanelli on the map by creating a work of art that would draw thousands of people to the area”. Said Mr Webb.
As everyone knows, The Hollywood Sign is a famous landmark in the Hollywood Hills. It was created as an advertisement in 1923, but garnered increasing recognition after the sign was left up and has become an iconic symbol known the world over.
The Llanelli sign, which is currently in the planning phase, would see the word Llanelli written in 45-foot (14 m) tall red letters above Pwll bringing back memories of the 2000 Eisteddfod when Welcome appeared.
Funding for project would come from the Arts Council & Tourism Grants but Mr Webb also has his sights set on local businesses. “I’m hoping that the locals will back this idea 100% and perhaps sponsor a letter, that way it will become sustainable as with our climate the letters will need to be painted once a year!”
Local Councilor Stuart Goddard was backing the idea and said “I’m all for something that increases tourism and brings people to Llanelli. As like any other industrial Town, we have suffered our problems but it’s time to put us on the map and show the world that Llanelli means business!” He also added “I’ve been told that you’ll be able to see it from space!”
However, not all share Councillor’s Goddard’s enthusiasm for the project, Tourism spokesperson Gordon Sumner said:
“We do have grave concerns over Health & Safety because if the letters are not bolted to the ground securely they will fall down in high winds and close the A484. I can also categorically state that our concerns have nothing whatsoever to do with a similar scheme we have for Carmarthen and we have not ‘pinched’ Mr Webb’s idea”.
Whatever the outcome of the project, LlanelliTown.com says do not be fooled by the various arguments for and against the scheme and back the Town!
